When the Body Stops Listening to the Head
A friend of mine has Parkinson’s Disease. There are times when members of his body simply won’t listen to his head. His head tells his arm to stop shaking but his arm ignores the instruction. His head tells his leg to move but it just stays frozen, intending to only move when it wants to. It’s almost like some of his members are each developing a mind of their own separate and apart from his head. Unfortunately, this “mind” is obstinate. His head knows what his body should be doing but these particular members insist that they know more than his head and they want to do things their way.
In the spiritual realm, Jesus is the Head and the church is the body (Ephesians 1:22-23). Sadly, there are members of the body who have stopped listening to the Head. The Head commands in His written Word, the Bible, and members ignore His instructions. It’s almost like some Christians and even entire congregations have developed minds of their own separate and apart from the Head. Unfortunately, this “mind” is obstinate. The Head knows what His body should be doing but some members of His body insist that they know more than the Head and they want to do things their way.
A physical body that does not listen to its head is dysfunctional. When members of the spiritual body stop listening to their Head, they place themselves in danger of eternal damnation (II Peter 2:20-22; Revelation 2:5). Parkinson’s Disease and other physical challenges cannot harm the soul. Disobedience to Jesus can (Matthew 7:21-23).
