"Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered." (Psalm 40:5).
How many blessings have you received from God? When did you last take the time to count them "one by one"? The Psalmist declares that God's wonderful works are beyond our ability to number. Every day we are immersed in them, be they physical or spiritual. Lamentations 3:22-23 says that God's mercies and compassions are new every morning. Truly, every day we have an endless number of reasons to thank God for His bountiful blessings.
Beyond the endless wonderful works mentioned in Psalm 40:5, we note that the Psalmist praises God regarding His thoughts toward us. They, too, are without number. Consider the depth of this for a moment. God thinks about us. The omnipotent, omnipresent God thinks about us. The Psalmist would later write of God's intimate knowledge of each of us (Psalm 139). Jesus echoed this sentiment in Matthew 10:29-31. As great and mighty as God is, He nonetheless thinks deeply and seriously about us. Not only that, His thoughts toward us, like His wonderful works, are without number. His thoughts lead to the blessings that He bestows for He wants only what is best for us both here and in eternity (II Peter 1:3 and 3:9).
A daily exercise for each of us should be taking time out to think about the One who is thinking about us. We will run out of time before we run out of blessings to count.
